Guide To Burial Insurance With Pre-Existing Conditions

The truth about pre-existing medical conditions is that no matter what, even if you have cancer, you can still get insured for a burial insurance policy.
This page is an all-encompassing guide to medical conditions and how they are viewed by insurance companies, for every single medical condition.
Now, this article will talk about each specific health condition on its own. However, just know that multiple health conditions can knock you out of coverage with some carriers. Every carrier is different, and knowing what you qualify for will take a few minutes with us to find out more about you.
Medical conditions are not the only thing insurance carriers care about though. They also look at your prescriptions to determine risk.
We will have a list of the major prescriptions that insurance carriers may penalize you for at the bottom of this page, after all of the health conditions.
If you have a health condition or medication that is not mentioned, odds are it doesn’t matter. However, if you have questions we are happy to help! Give us a call or fill out the quote form and we will be in touch with you as soon as possible.
Plan Definitions
In this article are going to be a few different definitions for the different types of coverage available to you based on your health. We’ll go over each of those here so that you understand what they mean later on when researching your unique health conditions.
Level Coverage
Level coverage is the best type of coverage you can get. All level coverage is immediate coverage with no waiting period and is only given to people who meet each carrier’s unique underwriting guidelines. Our goal with every customer at Seniors Mutual is to qualify them for level immediate coverage.
Graded Coverage
Graded coverage is the next best option and a hybrid between level and guaranteed issue coverage. If you can’t qualify for level immediate coverage with any carrier due to your health and/or age, graded is your best option. Graded coverage increases in price slightly but the big kicker is the partial waiting period.
Most graded plans pay something like 30% benefits if you die the first year, 70% the second year, and after two years you receive full benefits.
Guaranteed Issue Coverage
Guaranteed Issue Coverage asks no health questions and everyone is guaranteed a policy, hence the name. However, all guaranteed issue policies come with a two-year waiting period. If you die within this two-year waiting period your beneficiary will only get what you’ve paid in with monthly premiums, with usually a 10% rate of return.
While this 10% is hard to beat in other financial markets, we recommend finding the best level or graded policy for you, if your health and age allows it.
Pre-Existing Conditions
AIDS/HIV
If you have AIDS/HIV you can still get burial insurance. However, your only options are with a guaranteed issue carrier, that asks no medical questions.
Prices are affordable but all of these policies come with a waiting period of 2 years. If you pass away within those 2 years, they give you back all of the premiums paid along with interest, usually 10%.

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
ALS disqualifies you from most carriers, but there are a few that will offer you graded coverage. Graded coverage won’t pay the full benefit in the first year but will pay more than guaranteed issue and is cheaper than a guaranteed issue plan most of the time.

Alcohol Abuse
The last time you took a prescription medication or were diagnosed as abusing alcohol by a medical provider will matter here. Most of the time, if it was over two years ago, you can get immediate level coverage. If it was within two years then you can only qualify for graded coverage.

Alzheimer’s/Dementia
If you are looking for burial insurance for someone with dementia, this is possible! Your only option here is with a guaranteed issue company, since they don’t ask health questions. Just know that the insured will be subject to the two year waiting period and guaranteed issue companies only offer coverage up to the age of 80. If they are over that age you cannot get burial insurance with any carrier for them.

Amputation
Amputations due to accidents are not a problem at all and you can qualify with many carriers for level immediate rates. However, if you amputation is due to diabetes or disease of some kind your options narrow. If you started over two years ago, you shouldn’t have any problem qualifying for a no waiting period policy. While there is one company that doesn’t care how long ago you started taking them, you may still be knocked out of coverage with them for other health reasons.

As soon as it’s been over two years since you’ve been in remission, the doors start to open. Many carriers at this point will offer immediate coverage at no additional cost than before the cancer. The door opens further to more and more carriers the longer you have been in remission.

If you don’t smoke cigarettes, but do occasionally use a pipe or smoke a cigar, you are in luck! There are a few companies out there that will categorize you as a non-smoker and give you non-smoker rates.

There is one (only one) company that will offer you level immediate coverage for Rheumatoid Arthritis. However, you should know that it will depend on the prescriptions you take.
If you take very serious or large amounts of medication for this condition you will not qualify for level rates. It all depends on your dosage and type of medication.
Usually, this is not a problem, and we have found level coverage for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, but it is possible to take too much medication to qualify.

We offer many burial insurance carriers, and almost all of them do not penalize you for having Sickle Cell Anemia.
In fact, most carriers won’t even ask about this condition at all!
The only catch to this disease is it puts you at a higher risk for having something like a heart attack. Make sure you get coverage before this happens because your premiums will go up and you will be forced to undergo a waiting period most of the time.
Sleep Apnea
As we said earlier on daily oxygen use, sleep apnea is exempt from oxygen use in burial insurance underwriting.
Essentially, they don’t care about sleep apnea at all, as it is a common condition that is not a risk at all.

We can find you the best company at the lowest price no matter what condition you’re in!
Prescriptions
This is not an exhaustive list, but some of the major prescriptions that can majorly effect your eligibility for insurance coverage.

Carvedilol
Most people take this drug for Congestive Heart Failure. If you are taking this for something other than that, you are fine, but it must be noted with us for the insurance carrier.
If you are taking this drug for Congestive Heart Failure, you most likely will have to go with a guaranteed issue carrier.
Coumadin
The most common use of Coumadin is to treat and prevent blood clots. For most carriers, this drug is fine, but if you are taking it for a stroke, then it can throw some of them off and deny your coverage.
A conversation with a Seniors Mutual agent will allow us to know exactly which carrier to pair you with if you are taking this drug.
Donepezil
Donepezil is used to treat dementia, and since you have dementia your only option is with a guaranteed issue carrier.
Furosemide (Lasix)
This is another one that most people take for CHF. However, if you are taking this for another reason it is important to let us know, as many carriers will offer level immediate coverage if this is taken for another reason.

Refer to our health condition sections on those conditions if you’ve had a stroke or heart attack recently.
Suboxone
There is only one carrier that will offer you level immediate coverage if you use or have used Suboxone, and that is if it is only used for pain.
While many people say this is for pain, most of the time it’s being used to recover from drug addiction. If this is the case, you will only qualify for graded coverage.
Warfarin
